Title
Huipil for everyday use from Campeche, Campeche 2009

Ethnic Group: Mestiza Campechana
Donated by Ángeles López-Portillo de Stiteler
White cotton huipil, hand embroidered in cross stitch with black threads and three shades of
blue, with the Campeche crest in front and walls, ships, and palms around the neck and on
the sides of the sleeves.
The traditional huipil for Campeche included an embroidered cross stitched image of
pumpkin and onion flowers in triangle form over the chest and also around the square neck.
In 1940, for the 400th anniversary of the state of Campeche, the government authorized
permission to put a new design for the Campechano huipil that continues to this day. The
design includes the Campeche shield with a neck adorned with ships, castles, anchors, and
palms.
