Sisters-in-law Nicolasa Pérez Gómez (left) and Alberta Díaz León (right) show the two styles of dress in Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas. Nicolasa’s dress is very much of European styling with a blouse of fine machine-embroidered flowers and lace trim, a short pleated skirt, and a magenta satin apron. Alberta’s outfit is a huipil with bold red and yellow stripes. The textile for the skirt and the sash woven on a backstrap loom are sold by men who visit from San Cristobal de las Casas.
