The plants for sale at MUREM represent Yucatecan flora, and are grown and collected from our gardens among others, some of them were donated, all with the aim of raising funds for the maintenance of the museum.

We offer a great variety of plants including specimens endemic to the region, such as ferns, which are known to be one of the oldest plants in the world, surviving four extinctions and with fossils dating back 420 million years, they usually grow in humid environments, which is why they are common in the region, especially growing on the rock walls inside the cenotes.

Another native plant is the Galán de Noche, which is distinctive for releasing its aroma during the night. There are also plants introduced to the peninsula during colonization. An example of this is the ruby-leafed plant which is native to Southeast Asia and was acculturated by the Mayan culture with the name Sak wuay or “whitish” referring to its yellowish white flowers, which stand out among its red leaves. This plant is now common in the region and is used for anti-inflammatory, analgesic and bactericidal medicinal purposes, which is why its leaves are usually used in the Yucatan area to make a poultice that cures mange in dogs.

With the large selection and affordable prices, you are sure to find a beautiful botanical gem to take home while supporting the museum with your purchase.
