Family connections are made with a visit to the MUREM Library

Recently, Lidia Tuz Jimenez and her colleague José Alberto visited MUREM to gather information  for the quinquennial economic census of INEGI, Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geográfica.

When she saw the clothing on view in the Mundo Maya gallery Lidia mentioned that her grandfather was a chiclero and that he had been photographed by Macduff Everton, a photographer, illustrator, and author most known for his work about the Yucatan Peninsula.

We have two English editions of Everton´s book ¨The Modern Maya¨ in the museum library, so we immediately went up to have a look. Linda was able to show us the photographs that Everton had taken of her grandfather, Casimiro Jimenez, and his brother Diego, a chiclero who is the subject of many signature images in the book.

A day or two later, Lidia returned to the museum to show us Everton´s photo of her family, including Lidia as a young girl, and sent us a digital image of the photo that Macduff gave her family. We include that photo here.
Everton is currently an editor for National Geographic Traveler. His photos are in several international museums, libraries, and private collections. In addition to his own books, he has contributed to  important archaeological books and notable print and digital magazines such as Life, Conde Nast Traveler, Smithsonian, and the New York Times.

The MUREM library is a reference library with approximately 1000 books, magazines, and other materials on the clothing and community traditions of Mexico along with Ibero-American themes on a wide range of topics such as history, art, and geography, to other more specific topics such as Mayan culture and traditional medicine. We include texts in Spanish and English as well as some texts in Italian and German.

Everyone is welcome to explore the library which is now open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., or by appointment
