The Museum of Ethnic Clothing of Mexico A.C. (MUREM) in the recognition of Yucatecan Mayan Embroidery as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Yucatán has been involved as a collaborator in the promotion and preservation of this rich artisanal tradition. During the last year, through meetings at the museum with embroiderers from Valladolid, Kimbilá and San José Oriente, and with representatives of UNESCO, the museum has advocated for the official recognition of this ancestral practice, which represents an essential part of cultural identity. of Yucatan.

Silvia Terán, UNESCO´s cultural heritage consultant, highlighted the antiquity and deep roots of Yucatecan Mayan embroidery, which dates back to pre-Hispanic times. Thanks to the joint efforts of institutions and organizations, such as the state´s Secretary of Culture and the Arts, SEDECULTA, the Yucatecan Institute of Entrepreneurs, IYEM, Fundación Banorte and MUREM, significant progress was achieved in the official declaration of this practice.

Yesterday, March 18, the Yucatan state congress unanimously approved the declaration.

The declaration not only seeks to recognize the symbolic and heritage importance of Mayan embroidery, but also to implement concrete actions for its preservation and transmission to future generations. It is expected that this recognition will contribute to improving the quality of life of the embroiderers and strengthening their cultural self-esteem. The commitment of all parties involved reflects a true collaboration for the benefit of the cultural heritage and identity of Yucatán.
